Wikipedia is a free content multilanguage online encyclopedia written and maintained by a community of volunteer contributors through a model of open collaboration, using wiki-based editing system. Wikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history. 

Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger.

Other collaborative online encyclopedias were attempted before Wikipedia, but none were successful. Wikipedia began as a complementary project for Nupedia, a free online English-language encyclopedia project whose articles were written by experts and reviewed under a formal process. 
  • Restrictions in Wikipedia
Due to the increasement population in Wikipedia, some editions, including the English version, have introduced editing restrictions for certain cases. For instance, on the English Wikipedia and some other language editions, only registered users can create articles.

Content in Wikipedia is subjected to the laws of the United States and of the US state of Virginia, where the majority of Wikipedia's servers are located. Beyond legal matters, The editorial principles of Wikipedia are embodied in the ""five pillars" and in numerous policies and guidelines intended to appropriately shape content.
